Existence of magnetic compressible fluid stars

Abstract:

Abstract: We prove the existence of magnetic star solutions which are axi-symmetric stationary solutions of the Euler-Poisson system of compressible fluids coupled to a magnetic field. Such solutions arise in some physically interesting and important phenomena in astrophysics; for example solar flares. Our approach is variational whereby we minimize an energy functional subject to a total mass constraint. Our proof contains some novel features. (Joint work with P. Federbush and T. Luo.)
